How do I get my site into Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode pulls from pages it can crawl, that answer the question directly, and that it trusts enough to quote. Most sites already fail one of those three, and the fastest way to find out which is Search Console's AI performance report alongside a couple of free checks, not guesswork.

In brief

This is the practical, checks-first companion to how to get your business into Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: instead of the full mechanics, it walks through what to look at this week to see where your own site already stands and what to fix first.

What does Google AI Mode actually need from a page?

A page Google can crawl, that states the answer plainly, and that Google has enough reason to trust. Google's own documentation describes AI features as running on standard Search indexing and quality signals rather than a separate ranking system, so a page already ranking well and answering a buying question directly is most of the way there. What usually stands between a good page and an AI Mode citation is one of three gaps: the crawler cannot reach it, the answer is not in the HTML it can read, or nothing corroborates who you are.

Proof: Google — AI features and your website · Google — optimizing for generative AI features.

Bottom line: treat this as three separate checks, not one. A page can pass two of them and still never get cited because of the third.

How do I check whether Google AI Mode is already pulling from my site?

Search Console's AI performance report is the closest thing to a direct signal, and it is where this check starts. It breaks impressions down by page, country, device and date, so you can see which pages Google's AI features are already drawing on. It does not show the query asked or whether the generated answer named your business, so a rising number tells you Google is reading the page, not that AI Mode is recommending you.

Do this: run the report first to find which pages already get AI impressions, then run the free checks against those same pages. A page with rising impressions and a failing content check is the one most worth fixing this week.

Which pages does Google AI Mode seem to prefer?

The same pages that already rank well in ordinary Search and answer a buying question in the first sentence. Google states plainly that AI features apply the same quality signals Search already rewards, with first-hand information and a direct answer weighted heavily. We see the same pattern across audits run through our free check: pages that already rank on page one for a direct question are the ones that show up in the AI performance report, and category or roundup pages that never answer anything directly rarely do, even when they rank.

Why it matters: you are not writing new content for AI Mode specifically. You are finding the page that already half-qualifies and finishing the job.

What should I fix first if I am not appearing?

Access, then entity, then content, in that order, because each later fix is invisible until the one before it is solved. A page Google-Extended cannot reach never gets read at all, so no amount of rewriting helps until robots.txt and any CDN bot-blocking let it through. Once it can be read, an unclear entity, no Organization schema, no consistent name across your own pages, makes Google less willing to treat the page as an authority. Only then does the answer itself, stated in the first sentence rather than buried in the third paragraph, decide whether it gets quoted.

Proof: Google — overview of Google crawlers, including Google-Extended.

Check it now: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and confirm Google-Extended carries no Disallow: /. CDN bot-filtering defaults catch this more often than a hand-written robots.txt does.

Does an AI Mode citation mean ChatGPT or Perplexity will recommend me too?

No. Each engine runs its own crawler and its own sourcing logic, so a result in one tells you nothing certain about the others. The underlying work, access, entity, answer-first content, is the same groundwork behind getting recommended by ChatGPT, but Google-Extended access says nothing about whether OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot are also let in, and the exact difference between AI Mode and the AI Overviews panel is its own question, covered in how AI Mode and AI Overviews differ.

Do this: check each engine separately. A pass on Google's AI features is one engine out of several a buyer might actually be using.

What to do this week

None of this requires buying anything, and each step takes a few minutes:

Bottom line: most sites can diagnose exactly where they stand with Google AI Mode in under ten minutes, without changing anything yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI Mode checker?

A set of checks that read your site the way Google AI Mode's retrieval does: whether crawlers can reach the page, whether the answer sits in raw HTML, and whether Search Console already shows AI impressions for it.

Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No, though they share the same indexing and quality signals. AI Mode is Google's full conversational search tab; AI Overviews are the AI-written summary panel inside regular results.

How is Google AI Mode different from ChatGPT or Claude?

AI Mode runs inside Google Search, gated by the Google-Extended crawler permission. ChatGPT and Claude run their own separate crawlers and sourcing logic, so a pass in AI Mode is not a pass with them.

How do I analyze whether Google AI Mode is pulling from my site?

Open Search Console's AI performance report for impressions by page, then run a crawler-access and content check on those pages to see whether what Google is pulling from actually answers the buying question.

What should I fix first if Google AI Mode isn't citing me?

Crawler access first, then an unambiguous entity, then answer-first content, in that order, because a blocked crawler makes every later fix invisible to Google regardless of how good the page is.
