Plain-English guide

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business visible and recommendable inside AI answers — in ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity — the way SEO made you visible in Google's links. When someone asks an AI “what's the best…?”, the engine names two or three companies. GEO is everything you do so one of those names is yours.

GEO vs SEO — what actually changed

SEO optimizes for a list of links; GEO optimizes for being the answer itself. The AI reads the web, weighs its sources, and names a shortlist of two or three companies. There is no page two: if you're not in the answer, the customer never sees you at all.

Proof: Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode build on ordinary indexing and quality signals, with no separate “AI markup” — AI features and your website.

Bottom line: keep your SEO foundation — GEO doesn't replace it, it sits on top. If search systems can't retrieve a page, no AI feature can recommend it either.

How AI decides who to recommend

AI doesn't guess — it follows a chain, and the chain breaks at the weakest link. Every engine works differently in the details, but the sequence is the same:

Proof: this is the exact chain the Reflexa audit walks, in order — and why Reflexa refuses to score later layers when an early one fails. A pretty schema score on an unreachable site would be a lie.

Do this: fix the chain top-down. Nothing you do about content or authority matters while the door is closed.

What actually moves the needle

Five signals decide most of your AI visibility — and they're the five Reflexa weighs first in every audit:

Proof: Google — optimizing for generative AI features · OpenAI — ChatGPT Search.

Do this first: if you only have one hour, spend it on the first signal. Access problems silently cancel everything below them.

What doesn't work (skip the myths)

Most “GEO hacks” being sold right now are myths — the engines' own documentation contradicts them:

Proof: Google — optimizing for generative AI features. This is also why the Reflexa report never sells schema as a citation lever — it's scored as a supporting signal, below access and content.

Rule of thumb: when someone promises an “AI visibility trick”, check it against the engines' documentation first.
