Ask which engines it actually queries by name, whether you can read the real AI answer or only a score, and whether it changes your site or only reports on it. Those three answers rule out most vendors before you reach the pricing page. The other seven questions below protect the budget you've already decided to spend.
This is the checklist version of the 10 best AI visibility tools in 2026, ranked and compared: that page covers what exists today, this one covers what to ask before any of it has your card on file.
Get the exact engine list by name, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity at minimum, because "we cover AI search" is marketing copy, not a spec. Claude is the one engine vendors most often quietly drop, since it cites a source in only about half of its answers in our own checks and is harder to automate against than a search-backed engine. A tool that skips it will never show you a brand that is named there and invisible everywhere else.
Ask for: the engine list in writing, and one sample answer per engine for a question in your own category, not a demo screenshot.
Insist on the raw answer and its sources, not only a percentage or a letter grade, because you cannot fix a sentence you have never read. A score is a summary of a summary: it says something changed, not what the engine said, who it named instead, or which page it cited.
Red flag: a demo full of bars and percentages that never once shows the words an AI engine actually wrote.
Ask whether the count is a raw tally per question, or a single blended score across everything, because the two tell different stories. In our own September 2026 check of 100 buyer questions about AI visibility tools across three engines (300 answers total, Reflexa AI Visibility Index, September 2026), Profound was named in 94 answers, Semrush in 67, Otterly.AI and Peec AI in 49 each, Ahrefs in 39, SE Ranking in 21 and Scrunch AI in 19. A vendor could fold that into one "visibility score," but the raw counts are what let you see where you stand against a named competitor, question by question.
Ask for: per-question results you can export, not only an aggregate number on a monthly summary email.
Most AI visibility tools only report; a person still has to open the site and make the fix. That is fine if someone's week already includes acting on the findings; if not, the report becomes a list nobody gets to. Ask plainly: does the product change anything on the site, and who approves the change before it goes live? Reflexa applies fixes and publishes page text only after you approve it, rather than leaving the change to whoever reads the weekly email.
When another kind of tool is the better buy: managing fifty client brands for one slide-deck score favors a reporting dashboard, with your own team doing the fixing. Wanting the actual sentence AI said, and the ability to fix it without a developer, is a different category of tool.
Ask whether the price is per brand, per seat or per prompt pack, and what triggers an extra line item. Published self-serve pricing generally falls in three bands: free checks, $49–$199/month self-serve, and enterprise by quote, as laid out in what AI visibility tools cost in 2026. Inside the self-serve band, hidden costs are usually extra engines, extra prompt packs, and API access sold separately.
| Ask this | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which engines, by name? | "All AI search" can mean two engines or four; get the list |
| Can I read the actual answer? | A score without the answer cannot be acted on |
| Per question or one score? | A blended number hides which specific question you're losing |
| Does it change the site? | Decides whether you need a person to act on every finding |
| Per brand, seat, or prompt? | The same plan can cost very differently depending on how you're billed |
| What's not included? | Extra engines, prompt packs and API access are often sold separately |
| Data retention? | Decides whether you keep a trend or start from zero each renewal |
| Export format? | Decides whether you can take your history to a different tool later |
| Cancellation terms? | Monthly vs annual lock-in changes the real cost of trying it |
| How is a "fix" defined? | Some vendors call a suggestion a fix; ask if anything actually changes |
Ask about data retention and export format before you need the answer, not after. A tool that only shows this month's number isn't tracking anything; one that exports the full run history in an open format is one you can actually leave later.
Honestly, in the same order. Engines: ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, named, not "all AI search." Evidence: every finding ships with the raw AI answer and its sources, not only a score. Counting: per buyer question, with a competitor view and weekly checks, not one blended number. Change: the agent applies the fix or writes the page text and publishes only after you approve it, the one question most reporting tools cannot answer yes to. Pricing: a flat $49/month per account, first check free, no card, about three minutes. What Reflexa does not do is track prompts across engines week by week like a dedicated monitoring tool; say so if that is what you need.
None of this requires buying anything yet, and each step takes a few minutes:
Ask which engines it queries by name, whether you can read the raw AI answer and its sources rather than only a score, whether the count is per buyer question or one blended number, whether it changes your site or only reports, how pricing is structured, and what happens to your data if you cancel.
Get the exact list by name, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity at minimum, because "we cover AI search" is marketing language, not a spec, and some vendors quietly skip Claude because it is harder to automate.
A score alone is not enough. You cannot fix a sentence you have never read, so ask every vendor to show the raw answer and its sources, not only a percentage or a letter grade.
Most tools only report; a person still has to act on the finding. Ask directly whether the product changes anything on the site itself, and if so, who approves the change before it goes live.
Ask whether the price is per brand, per seat or per prompt pack, what counts as an extra engine or extra question set, and get the cancellation and data-export terms in writing before you pay.
The free check reads your site the way ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read it, and shows the actual answer, not a score. 3 minutes, evidence included.
