By query group, tracked over several weeks, never by one page or a single screenshot. Pair Search Console's AI performance report, which has no query-level breakdown, with a free check that asks the actual buyer question and records what ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity say back.
This is a narrower, more practical companion to the wider AI search statistics roundup on this site: that page tracks the trend lines across engines, this one is a method for reading your own AI Overviews data without overreacting to a single page or a single run.
It is three separate counts that move independently, not one number. An impression means Google's system pulled a snippet from your page into an AI Overview. A citation means your page is listed as one of the sources. A recommendation means the generated text actually names your business as the one to pick. A page can rack up impressions while its citation count stays flat, and a citation can sit inside an answer that recommends a competitor by name.
Why it matters: a dashboard that shows "AI visibility" as one trend line hides which of these three is actually moving, and each needs a different fix.
Because the AI performance report Google rolled out worldwide on August 31, 2026 groups impressions by page, country, device and date, with no query column. That's a gap compared with the regular Performance report most site owners already use, which does break results down by query. You can see that a page generated AI impressions, but not which buyer question triggered them.
Proof: Google Search Central blog, "Introducing Search generative AI performance reports in Search Console" (June 2026); Search Engine Land, AI performance reports and generative AI control rolling out globally (August 2026). The gap is covered in full on Google Search Console's new AI performance report, explained.
Workaround: cross-reference the pages flagged with AI impressions against the queries your regular Performance report already ties to those same pages, then group by the buyer question they answer, not by exact keyword.
Start from the regular Performance report, filter for queries shaped like a buyer question rather than a brand name, then tag each one to the page that would answer it. A query group is every variant of one real question, "best project management tool for a 10-person team," "project management software for small teams," "cheapest project management tool for startups," pointed at the same page or cluster of pages. Export the list once, add a page column, and you have a map you can re-run weekly instead of refreshing a screenshot.
| Unit of analysis | What it tells you | What it misses |
|---|---|---|
| One page, one screenshot | Whether an AI Overview mentioned that page once | Variance between runs, every other buyer question the page could answer |
| One page, Search Console trend | Impression volume over time, by country and device | Which query drove it, whether it was cited, whether it was recommended |
| A query group, tracked weekly | Whether the whole buyer question is gaining or losing presence, and where | Nothing it's built to measure, this is the unit to analyze with |
Rule of thumb: if you can't name the five buyer questions a page is supposed to win, you don't yet have a query group, you have a page.
By re-asking the same query group across several weeks and logging which result type answered it each time, never from one pass. Ahrefs's citation analysis, reported by Search Engine Journal, found that only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also ranked in Google's top 10 organic results for the same query in 2026, down sharply from 76% in a mid-2025 run of the same study. Ranking and being cited in an AI Overview are drifting apart, exactly the kind of shift one screenshot can't catch.
Proof: Search Engine Journal, "Google AI Overview citations from top-ranking pages drop sharply" (Ahrefs data, 2026). More in ranking #1 on Google no longer means AI recommends you.
Do this: log, for each query group, whether the answer was a standard result, an AI Overview, or both. A query that flips to "AI Overview" is worth a fresh look at what changed on the cited page.
None of the steps below need a purchase:
Bottom line: the data is already free, in Search Console and in the free check; the missing piece is usually the query group, not another tool.

It is three separate counts, not one: how often your pages generate an AI Overviews impression, how often your own page is cited as a source, and how often the generated text actually names your business as the answer. A rising impression count can sit next to a flat or falling citation count.
Not from Google directly. The AI performance report in Search Console breaks impressions down by page, country, device and date, with no query column, so you have to infer the likely query group from the page itself and your regular Performance report.
Weekly, for at least three to four weeks before drawing any trend line. AI answers vary run to run on the same question, so a single check is a snapshot, not a measurement.
No. AI Overviews is a Google-only surface. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity read your site independently and can reach a different answer for the same buyer question, so a citation in one has to be checked separately in the others.
AI Overviews are the generated summary panels inside standard Google results; AI Mode is Google's separate, fully conversational search experience. Search Console's AI performance report currently groups impressions from both together, so you cannot split your analysis between the two from that report alone.
The free check asks ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity the buyer questions behind your AI Overviews impressions, and keeps the evidence. 3 minutes, no card.
