Data roundup

AI Search Statistics 2026.

The numbers that explain why AI visibility now decides who gets found — adoption, how buyers use AI to choose, the collapse of the click, how little AI answers overlap with Google, and how many top sites still lock AI out. Every figure is sourced. Last updated August 2026.

Adoption: AI is now a default surface

AI answers reach billions of people every week — this is no longer a niche.

~900M weekly active users of ChatGPT by early 2026, up from ~800M in late 2025. TechCrunch
2B+ monthly users of Google's AI Overviews, across 200+ countries — a default part of Search. Digiday / Google earnings

How buyers actually use AI to choose

People don't just chat with AI — they use it to decide what to buy and who to trust.

~60% of Americans say they've used gen-AI tools to help them shop. Consumer survey (2025)

72% of shoppers who use AI say it's their primary tool for researching products and brands. Capital One Shopping

The click is collapsing

When the answer sits at the top, most people never click through — being in the answer is the new front page.

~68% of Google searches ended without a click to another site in early 2026 — a record. Search Engine Land
~8% of searches get a click when an AI Overview is shown — down from ~15% when it isn't. Pew Research, via Search Engine Land

AI answers are not Google results

Ranking on Google does not mean AI cites you — the two surfaces barely overlap.

8–12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appear in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Ahrefs (15,000 prompts)
~17% source overlap between ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews on the same prompts. Citation-overlap study

The access gap (our own data)

Many businesses lose the game before it starts — by blocking AI crawlers at the front door. We checked the robots.txt of 40 well-known companies ourselves:

18% of 40 major sites block at least one major AI crawler in robots.txt. Reflexa study (2026)
57% of the news publishers we checked block AI crawlers — while most businesses leave the door open. Reflexa study (2026)

What the numbers mean for you

The takeaway from every figure above is the same: AI answers are where discovery now happens, and your Google rank doesn't carry over. Buyers ask, the engine names two or three companies, and the click — if there is one — goes to whoever is in the answer. Whether that's you is measurable, and it starts with being reachable, readable and citable to the engines.

Do this: check what AI actually says about your business today — the free Reflexa check runs the real questions across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity and shows where you stand, with the evidence.
