AI visibility tool or build your own?

A script that asks ChatGPT fifty questions a week costs a day of work and a few cents to run. It is fine for a rough count of how often you get named. It cannot reach Claude and Perplexity the way their own apps do, pull the sources behind an answer, or change anything on your site, which is what a paid tool, or an agent, buys instead.

In brief

This sits next to the 10 best AI visibility tools in 2026, ranked and compared, which covers what each paid tool does. Here the comparison is simpler: a script you write yourself against any of them.

What does it actually take to build a ChatGPT tracking script?

Less than most people expect. A script that sends fifty buyer questions to the ChatGPT API once a week, stores the answers, and greps them for your brand name is roughly a day of work for anyone comfortable calling an API, and the API usage for fifty questions a week runs to a few dollars a month at most. Storing the results in a spreadsheet or a small database is the easy part; the work starts once you want the script to tell you something a weekly glance would not.

What won't a DIY script catch?

Four things, in order of how much they cost you. First, engine coverage: the ChatGPT API is not Claude's API, and Claude cites a source in only about half of its answers in our own checks, so a script built around one engine's quirks has to be rebuilt, not extended, to cover the next one (our AI visibility tools that cover Claude check). Second, source extraction: knowing which pages an answer actually drew on takes real parsing work the API response does not hand you cleanly. Third, change tracking: because the same question can get a different answer on back-to-back runs, a script needs several runs' worth of history before a change means anything, not just last week versus this week.

Fourth, and the one that matters most: a script only ever produces a log. It does not open your robots.txt, write your schema, or rewrite a page's first sentence. Every DIY tracking project still ends with someone copying a finding into a ticket for a developer.

What does a paid AI visibility tool buy that a script doesn't?

Mostly, it buys back the maintenance work, not a different kind of data. A maintained tool keeps asking ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity the same questions after each engine quietly changes its API or its answer format, which is exactly the part that breaks a hand-built script without warning. See which AI visibility tools are worth the price for the full band-by-band breakdown of what that upkeep costs at each size of business.

Is a DIY script ever the right call?

Yes, for a narrow case. If all you want is a rough weekly count of how often ChatGPT names your brand on a handful of questions, and someone on the team can maintain a script without it becoming a second job, a script is a defensible $0 choice. It stops being the right call the moment you need Claude or Perplexity in the picture, or need to show someone else, a boss or a client, that a fix actually changed an answer.

Why doesn't tracking fix the problem either way?

Because naming the gap and closing it are two different jobs, and both a script and most paid tools stop at naming it. Reflexa's own paid plans are built around the second job: every finding ships with the raw AI answer and its sources as evidence, not a score, and the agent applies the fix you approve, whether that is opening crawler access or rewriting a page's opening sentence, instead of leaving it in a report. Weekly checks, a competitor view, the AI Radar reading of your pages and a Google-versus-AI comparison against Search Console come with the same plan (reflexatechnologies.com/pricing, October 2026).

Frequently asked questions

AI visibility tool vs building your own prompt tracking: which is better?

A script that asks ChatGPT a weekly batch of questions is a day of work and a few cents to run, and it is fine for a rough count of how often your brand gets named. A paid tool earns its price once you need Claude and Perplexity in the mix, the sources behind an answer, or a fix applied rather than just reported.

What can't a DIY prompt-tracking script do?

It cannot reliably reach Claude and Perplexity the way their own apps and web search do, extract the cited sources behind an answer without extra parsing work, or hold a clean week-over-week history given how much answers vary run to run. Above all, it cannot change anything on your site.

Is there a tool to create and manage my own custom prompt set for monitoring AI visibility?

Yes, a DIY script and most paid AI visibility tools do the same basic job: you define a set of buyer questions and run them on a schedule. The difference is whether what comes back is also used to fix something on the site, which a prompt set alone never does.

Does a paid AI visibility tool fix my site, or just report on it?

Most report only, which is the same output a careful DIY script already gives you. Reflexa is the exception we can speak to directly: its paid plans apply the fixes you approve, rather than only listing them in a dashboard.

How much does a DIY script cost compared with a paid tool?

A weekly script against one engine's API runs on a few dollars of usage a month plus the time to build and maintain it. Self-serve AI visibility tools run roughly $49-$199/month (reflexatechnologies.com/pricing, October 2026), and enterprise plans move to a custom quote.
