AI engines

Which AI engine matters most for my business: ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity?

None of them alone, because they don't agree with each other. ChatGPT is the only one with a clearly published, large audience figure, but Reflexa's own checks show a brand's mention rate and its citation rate can move by double-digit gaps even within a single engine, so a business has to check all three against its own buyer questions rather than bet on the biggest name.

In brief

How many people actually use each engine?

Only ChatGPT has a clear, large published figure; Claude and Perplexity don't report a directly comparable number. ChatGPT reached about 900 million weekly active users in early 2026, up from roughly 800 million just months earlier. Anthropic has disclosed growth rates for Claude, such as weekly active users doubling after January 1, 2026, but not an absolute user count, and Perplexity has not published a standard weekly figure either. The fuller figure set, including how AI adoption compares with classic search, lives in AI Search Statistics 2026.

Proof: TechCrunch — ChatGPT weekly active users (February 2026).

Bottom line: you can only confirm "biggest audience" for one of the three engines today; treat any claim about Claude's or Perplexity's relative size as unverified until either company publishes a comparable number.

Do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity recommend the same companies for the same question?

Not reliably, because each engine decides independently who to name, and a brand can clear one engine's bar while missing another's on an identical buying question. That's the core finding behind the Reflexa AI Visibility Index: it never blends engines into one score, because doing so would hide exactly this kind of disagreement. The full mechanics of why each engine's shortlist differs are covered in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity.

Proof: in the Reflexa AI Visibility Index's September 2026 project-management edition, brands mentioned by AI in 27-51% of eligible answers were cited on their own domain in only 6-18% of those same answers, a 21-33 point gap between the two counts for the same set of brands.

Why it matters: a single well-timed answer on one engine tells you almost nothing about the other two, or even about the next answer from the same engine.

What actually differs in how each engine decides who to recommend?

The three engines use different mechanics to build an answer, and that difference shows up directly in how often each one hands you a citation. ChatGPT blends its training data with a live search pass before naming a short list. Claude runs web search as a live tool call, but in Reflexa's own checks it gives a source in only about half of its answers, so a brand can be named there with no citation to show for it. Perplexity shows a numbered citation for nearly every claim in a visible Sources panel, making its citation rate the one you can literally count.

EngineHow it builds an answerCitation behavior
ChatGPTTraining data plus a live search pass, no guaranteed positionShortlist reasoning, not a fixed citation count
ClaudeLive web search as a tool call, inline citation when it citesSources a claim in only about half of its answers (Reflexa, Sept 2026)
PerplexityLive search, every source listed in a visible panelNumbered citation for nearly every claim

Proof: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity: how each picks who to recommend; Reflexa's own September 2026 checks of 100 buyer questions, cited in full on which AI visibility tools measure Claude.

Do this: if you only check Perplexity's Sources panel for proof, you'll miss the half of Claude's answers that name a company without citing anyone at all.

So which engine should I prioritize if I can only check one?

Pick the one your actual buyers open, not the one with the biggest press release. A high-volume consumer category leans toward ChatGPT's reach; a technical or research-heavy buyer often opens Perplexity specifically to see the Sources panel before trusting an answer; Claude is the one engine where Anthropic describes a correct robots.txt as a complete access answer, with no separate real-time exception to plan around, which matters if crawler access has been a recurring problem for your site.

Rule of thumb: "prioritize one engine" is a starting point for a time-boxed first check, never a long-term strategy, because the Index data above shows the gap between engines doesn't close on its own.

Is checking one engine three times the same as checking all three once?

No, both steps matter and skipping either one leaves a blind spot. AI answers are generated fresh each time, so three runs on ChatGPT alone only tells you how stable ChatGPT's own answer is, not whether Claude or Perplexity would name someone else entirely for the identical question. The Reflexa AI Visibility Index runs every question three times across all three engines for exactly this reason, covered in how often to re-check your AI visibility.

Bottom line: three runs on one engine answers "is this stable," three engines answers "is this true everywhere," and a real check needs both.

What to do this week

None of the steps below need a purchase, and most take a few minutes each:

Bottom line: the engine that matters most is the one that's about to answer your next buyer's question, and the only way to know which one that is, is to check all three.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI engine has the most users?

ChatGPT is the only one of the three with a clear, large published figure, about 900 million weekly active users in early 2026 (TechCrunch). Anthropic and Perplexity don't publish a directly comparable weekly number, so a size ranking across all three can't be stated as fact today.

Do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity recommend the same companies?

Not reliably. Each engine decides independently who to name for the same buyer question, and in Reflexa's own checks a brand's mention rate and its citation rate move by double-digit gaps even within one engine, so passing one engine's bar says nothing about another's.

Is Claude worth checking if most of my buyers use ChatGPT?

Yes, because audience size and recommendation behavior are different things. Claude gives a source in only about half of its answers in Reflexa's own checks, so a brand can be named there with no citation to show for it, which a ChatGPT-only check would never surface.

Should I just focus on the engine with the most users?

No. Audience size tells you how many people might see an answer, not whether that answer names you, and the three engines don't agree on that second question for the same buyer question.
